He joined the Mets in 1966 and became a full-time starter in 1968. In 1969, he was the first pitcher to throw a no-hitter in the modern era of baseball. He was traded to the Angels in 1972 and quickly emerged as one of the best pitchers in the American League. He was a seven-time All-Star with the Angels and won the American League strikeout title five times. In 1979, Ryan signed with the Astros and was a key figure in the team’s success in the 1980s. He was traded to the Rangers in 1989 and retired in 1993.
