    Mario Lemieux was born on October 5, 1965 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He was the youngest of three children and the only son of Jean-Guy and Pierrette Lemieux. His father was a construction worker while his mother was a homemaker. He began playing hockey at the age of 3 and was playing organized hockey by the time he was 5. He quickly rose to prominence in the hockey world and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins first overall in the 1984 NHL Entry Draft.

    Professional Career

    Lemieux quickly established himself as one of the premier players in the NHL. He won two Stanley Cups with the Penguins and was awarded the Hart Trophy as the NHL’s MVP three times. He also won the Art Ross Trophy as the league’s leading scorer six times and the Lester B. Pearson Award for the NHL’s most outstanding player twice. He was also a ten-time NHL All-Star and a three-time NHL First-Team All-Star. He retired in 1997 and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in the same year.

    In 1999, Lemieux became the owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins. He has since been credited with saving the team from bankruptcy and turning them into a Stanley Cup champion. He also served as the team’s chairman and CEO from 2006 to 2014.
