    Early Life of Kareem Abdul Jabbar

    Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was born on April 16, 1947, in New York City. He was raised in a middle-class family in the Inwood section of Manhattan. His parents, Ferdinand Lewis Alcindor Sr. and Cora Lillian, were both from Jamaica. His father was a transit police officer and his mother was a department store price checker. He attended Power Memorial Academy, where he began his basketball career. He was a standout player in high school and was voted the most valuable player in the city in 1965.

    Professional Career of Kareem Abdul Jabbar

    Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1969 NBA Draft. He quickly established himself as one of the best players in the league, winning the NBA Rookie of the Year Award in 1970. He was a six-time NBA champion, a six-time NBA Most Valuable Player, and a 19-time NBA All-Star. He is the only player in NBA history to win the MVP award six times. He is also the all-time leading scorer in NBA history with 38,387 points. He played in the NBA for 20 seasons, the longest career of any player in league history.

    In addition to his playing career, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is also an accomplished coach and author. He served as an assistant coach for the Los Angeles Clippers and the Seattle SuperSonics. He also wrote several books, including a New York Times bestseller, Giant Steps.
