Joe Gibbs was born Joseph Jackson Gibbs on November 25, 1940 in Mocksville, North Carolina. He attended Santa Fe High School in Alachua, Florida and later attended San Diego State University, where he played football for the Aztecs. After college, Gibbs was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1964 NFL Draft, but instead of playing in the NFL, he chose to pursue a coaching career. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach at San Diego State in 1965 and then moved on to the Florida State Seminoles in 1967. He then served as an offensive coordinator for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1969 to 1972.
