    Jerry Heller was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1940. He began his career in the music industry as a booking agent for prominent acts such as Marvin Gaye and Creedence Clearwater Revival. He eventually moved to Los Angeles, where he founded Ruthless Records with Eazy-E in 1986. At Ruthless, Heller was instrumental in signing and launching the careers of N.W.A, the group that would come to define gangsta rap. He also worked with other notable acts such as J.J. Fad, Michel’le, and The D.O.C.

    Heller was a controversial figure throughout his career. He was criticized for taking advantage of N.W.A’s members, and for mishandling the group’s finances. This led to a breakdown in the group’s relationships, and eventually to the group’s dissolution. Despite this, Heller was praised for his ability to recognize talent and for his role in bringing gangsta rap to the mainstream.
