In 1964, he joined the FBI and served as an agent in the New York office. After leaving the FBI, Liddy worked as a lawyer and political operative for the Nixon administration.

    In 1972, Liddy was recruited to be a part of the White House Plumbers, a secret unit tasked with stopping leaks in the Nixon administration. He was the chief operative for the unit and was involved in the Watergate scandal. He was convicted of conspiracy, burglary, and illegal wiretapping and sentenced to 20 years in prison. He was pardoned by President Jimmy Carter in 1977.
