Early Life
Elton John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on 25 March 1947 in Pinner, Middlesex, England. He was the eldest of Stanley and Sheila Dwight’s two children. His father, a Royal Air Force flight lieutenant, was a distant figure in the family and his mother was a strong influence in his life. Elton attended the Pinner County Grammar School and later the Royal Academy of Music, where he studied the piano. After graduating, he formed a band called Bluesology, and began writing songs for other artists.
Musical Career
In 1969, Elton released his first album, Empty Sky. His debut single, “Your Song”, was released in 1970 and quickly became a hit. He released several more albums over the next few years, including Honky Château, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, and Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Elton John released a steady stream of hit singles, including “Crocodile Rock”, “Philadelphia Freedom”, “Candle in the Wind”, and “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”. In 1994, he released his first album of original material in six years, The Lion King soundtrack.
Personal Life
Elton John married Renate Blauel in 1984 but the couple divorced four years later. He publicly came out as gay in 1988 and has been a vocal advocate for LGBT rights ever since. Elton married David Furnish in 2014 and the couple have two sons, Zachary and Elijah. Elton is also a noted philanthropist, having founded the Elton John AIDS Foundation in 1992. He has also been a patron of the Royal Academy of Music since 1971.
