Lindsey Graham was born on July 9, 1955 in Central, South Carolina to Florence James Graham and Millie Graham. He is the youngest of five children. Graham attended high school in Seneca, South Carolina and graduated in 1973. He then attended the University of South Carolina, where he received his bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1977. He went on to attend the University of South Carolina School of Law, graduating in 1981.
Graham served in the South Carolina Air National Guard from 1982 to 1988 and in the U.S. Air Force Reserve from 1989 to 1995, earning the rank of colonel. In 1994, he was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives, where he served until 1998. In the 1998 House of Representatives election, Graham was elected to the United States House of Representatives from South Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District. He was re-elected in 2000 and 2002.
In 2002, Graham was elected to the United States Senate, beating Democrat Alex Sanders. He was re-elected in 2008, 2014, and 2020. While in the Senate, Graham has served on the Appropriations, Armed Services, Budget, Environment and Public Works, and Judiciary committees, among others.
